The body is like a temple and the soul or inner reality is like the shrine inside the body-temple. If the temple does not have a shrine, then we cannot appreciate the temple. Again, if we do not keep the temple in good condition, then how can we take proper care of the shrine? We have to keep the body fit, and for this, running is of considerable help. If we are physically fit, then we will be more inspired to get up early in the morning to meditate.

In the beginning it is absolutely true that the body stands against the soul’s inevitabilities. But there comes a time when the soul comes to the fore and compels the body to become its faithful instrument. This is the victory of both the body and the soul. When the soul consciously makes the body feel what it should do, and the body is willing to listen to the dictates of the soul, then the body and the soul go together. When the body and the soul go together, realisation, revelation and manifestation take place. In the beginning this body stands against us. But when we are advanced, when we are nearing our journey’s Goal, we see that the physical consciousness is totally merged in the psychic consciousness. We see the physical in its transformed luminosity. The soul and the body become part and parcel of one Truth, and that Truth is God the infinite.

If one has ill health, is perfection attainable?

SRI CHINMOY: Ill health is a complicated term. Somebody’s physical constitution may not be as strong as it should be, but that is not ill health. When we use the term ill health, that means there is some ailment in the physical. Now, even if there is some ailment in the physical, spiritual light can still easily enter into the physical. If you are not physically strong, it does not mean that the highest Light or highest spiritual Height cannot enter into you. No, it can and it does. There have been many spiritual Masters who had a weak physical constitution or who did not have sound health. Just because you cannot sit properly or cannot walk properly does not mean that real perfection, divine perfection cannot enter into you. No! Real perfection, inner perfection, is not affected by any kind of ailment or physical shortcomings. But if it is some serious internal disease like cancer, or tuberculosis, or leukaemia, then the physical has to be totally cured if the seeker is to achieve total perfection. If it is not possible for the physical to be cured within a specific period by earthly means or medical aid, the body should at least try to be receptive so that the Divine Light from above can enter it and slowly and steadily cure the physical ailment. In this way, the body will become fit to hold boundless Light.

If a person is overweight, does it affect his consciousness?

Sri Chinmoy: If you are really heavy beyond necessity, your consciousness carries a heavy load. Lethargy enters into you most powerfully. When you lose unnecessary weight, excessive weight, your outer capacity increases and your inner beauty comes forward and grows in the physical. Deixo aqui dois textos de Sri Chinmoy sobre a profissão médica, do livro God´s Orchestra:

Doctor

I love a doctor because he, at least, is fighting for the same cause as I am: Immortality’s breath in humanity’s heart.

Homeopath

O medical science, O Homeopathy, O life-serving science, O life-saving science, I do not know you. But I do know well my most esteemed Homeopath friend, Bhumanandaji. His eagerness to serve God in mankind through you, Homeopathy, has always been a source of divine inspiration to me. Since your fond son, Bhumananda, is really good and kind to mankind, you must be most kind and most fulfilling. So, in you I see Reality’s Smile and Divinity’s Pride.
